The Times Mocks Itself

Today's NY Times' corrections section.

The ultimate expression of how lax the Times has become in preparing stories.

In a story about an expensive mistake due to the misplacement of a comma in a document, they......they....yes, you guessed it...they made a mistake in describing where the mistaken comma was.

Click below for the correction.

Really, folks, a few dozen monkeys banging away on keyboards would have a lower error rate than the Times.

Rage Against The Soviet Machine, Pt II

So Affe and I went to the range today. Affe brought his K31 to test out the scope he mounted on the venerable swiss military rifle and I brought my beloved Garand and my not so beloved Mosin M44.

I've gone on record as not liking this rifle but thought it was time to give it a second chance, especially since I have about 500 rounds of 7.62 x 54R and this is the only rifle I own that uses it.

As I mentioned in my original review of this rifle, it is a crude and harsh instrument. The bolt is difficult to cycle, the entire rifle feels like its made of several disjointed parts and the production quality in general is low (see, e.g., how the bottom of the magazine flops open with each shot, emptying the remaining rounds on the ground, which resulted in me borrowing some tape from Affe to secure the latch).

Now, I have a better reason to dislike this rifle. See the pictures below. Click on each picture for an enlargement, as you'll have to see a close up version to identify the problem.

This didn't happen just once or twice. It happened to many of the rounds fired today through the M44. I didn't realize it was happening until the target change period, when I picked up a piece of the spent brass and noticed the split cases.

Fucking Soviet piece of shit.
